The survey course in literature is a challenge: I've long heard colleagues speak about it and experienced it myself. But this book has a handful of its twelve essays that can push a faculty forward so that he or she can create a more meaningful experience for the student.Particularly of note in this collection: Henderson's "Bingo Pedagogy" and Dujardin's "Fear and Learning in the Historical Survey Course." Many of the essays are course-specific and won't apply to the survey course a given faculty teaches--I teach the world survey, for instance, so the essays specific to American don't speak to my needs--but pedagogically, this collection is meaningful. I heard about it at the FYE Conference, and it's part of a wonderful series (Teaching and Learning in Higher Education). We should all be asking these questions and creating meaningful opportunities, and this collection and scholarship is a place to start.
